Name: Jackie Musto Carroll

Residence: Yatesville Borough

Running for: District Attorney (Incumbent)

Education: Penn State University, University of Scranton (B.A., Business Administration); Temple University School of Law (Juris Doctorate)

Campaign Site: http://www.jackiemustocarroll.com/

Family: Husband, Tim; Three sons

In Her Own Words: “There’s no place I’d rather be, professionally, than in this office at this time in my life. I feel I am well suited for the job. I’m not ready to be neutral and there is still a lot of work I want to do in this office. I feel this is the right place for me to be: This is where I can make the most difference.”

Accomplishments: Jackie Musto Carroll is the first female District Attorney in Luzerne County’s history, a position she has held since 2008. Under Jackie’s stewardship, her office has prosecuted over 40 homicides and battled a surge in other violent crimes. Her tenure as Luzerne County’s top prosecutor has produced many successes and accomplishments. Among them being:

The opening of the Child Advocacy Center in Wilkes-Barre, which helps children who are victims of physical or sexual abuse

The creation of the Youth Aid Panel program for first-time, non-violent juvenile offenders, which holds them accountable for their actions while helping them get back on the right track and stay out of the legal system.

The distribution of approximately 8,000 “2smart4trbl” videos to middle school students since, teaching Luzerne County’s kids that their actions have legal consequences.

The creation of a bad check restitution program, which allows people who write bad checks to make restitution and undergo rehabilitation. While those enrolled in the program will still be responsible for their actions, if they successfully complete the program, their record will be clean. So far, the program has seen great success, yielding more than $100,000 in restitution fees.

The successful gun buy back program, in which citizens that turn in guns receive gift cards.

The formation of the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force to battle child pornography, which has led to numerous arrests.

Name: Elizabeth Martin

Residence: Dallas Township

Running for: Supervisor

Website: http://www.martin4supervisor.com/

Occupation: Managing Editor, Independent NEPA Magazine

Education: College Misericordia, Luzerne County Community College

Organizations: Back Mountain Business Association Board of Directors, 2008 & 2009 Dallas Harvest Festival Co-Chairperson, and the Brass Ring Fund Committee, Luzerne County Democratic Executive Committee. Liz was also a founding member of the Back Mountain Arts Association Board of Directors (Himmler Theater).

Family: Husband, Bob; Son, Robert.

In Her Own Words: “I’m a lifelong resident of the Back Mountain. Dallas Township has changed much since much since the 1970′s, but our leadership has remained the same. Residents are entitled to solutions and services that keep pace with the times. It’s time for a Fresh Start for Dallas Township.”

Platform: Liz’s platform is centered around work accountability, standing against over-development, and preserving recreational areas and keeping them safe for children and seniors to enjoy for generations to come. “There are presently no maintained public parks in Dallas Township for our children and their grandparents to play and have fun; we need to preserve and improve green spaces so that generations to come can enjoy them.”

When Liz ran for Supervisor in 2009, her campaign was focused on preservation of open space and she proposed a renewed effort to revitalize Dallas Township’s parks and recreations program, and voiced serious concerns shared by many members of the community for the Back Mountain’s environment and watersheds. As a virtual political unknown, Liz’s 2009 campaign came only a mere 31 votes shy of victory. Now, in 2011, Liz is running again, and enjoying support from township residents from all walks of life and a campaign even more energetic than before!

As an early member of GDAC (the Gas Drilling Awareness Coalition), she has recognized the importance of monitoring natural gas activity, and has immersed herself in what has become the emerging top issue for Back Mountain residents and residents from across Northeastern Pennsylvania. This year, Liz is bringing everything she has learned back to the table, with the sobering realization that this is a critical time for the township where the environment, property values, the safety of our children, integrity of our drinking water and quality of life are all at stake. With so much at risk, Liz believes that now is the time for change in municipal government leadership. Forward-looking, progressive thinking is what Dallas Township needs to retain its rural character and remain a safe place to live and raise a family; a wonderful area to pass on to future generations.
